The Gift and the Heart Behind It | A Reflection on Giving

This reflection is inspired on a Sunday sermon, where we were reminded that it is not about the size of the gift, but the heart behind it. Because more than any material thing we can give, what truly matters is what the heart desires and is willing to offer. We are reminded that God gave His only begotten Son because He loves us, and He still does up until today.

That message has already been said and preached many times. But today, I wanted to look at it from a different angle.

As I listened, reflected, and meditated on the Word, this is what I received and wanted to share. It is both about the gift, and the heart behind it.

Your Gift Matters More Than You Think

Your gift is important, and it is appreciated. What you prepared and wrapped for someone is already an expression of love. It shows that you have a heart willing to give, to obey, and to surrender.

When you prepare a gift, it is not something you do randomly. It is something that was thought about. Giving a gift means you had to give something up. It could be the money you used to buy it, the time you set aside, or something you chose not to spend on yourself just so you could bless someone else.

Your gift is important, just as the heart behind it is.

Even if you did not fully mean it, or even if you felt forced to give, your gift still meant something to someone else. What you thought was simple may have been something they had never received before. The gift you did not think much about may have been exactly what they needed at that moment. You may never know, but your gift became something meaningful to someone else.

We Give Because God First Gave

Friends, let us be reminded that we do not give because we have extra money or full pockets. We give because God has given us everything. All that we have comes from God, and all of it is a gift from Him.

Yet the greatest gift is not something this world can offer. It is the One who came from above.

More than the manna the Israelites received in the wilderness, more than the bread that came from heaven, Jesus Himself is the greatest gift anyone can receive. Through Him, we are offered eternal life. He is not just a gift we receive once, but the gift that continues to give life.

When Giving Becomes a Burden

Giving today has become more than a conviction. It has become a tradition. Especially during the Christmas season, giving can feel like a responsibility rather than an act of love.

Whether you are a hardworking mother, a godparent, or someone who has very little, there is often pressure to give. Parties, exchanges, and gatherings happen one after another, and sometimes we feel forced to join even when we do not know what to give or how to give because of our limitations, especially financially.

Sadly, giving can sometimes cause us to forget ourselves. After all the effort, sacrifices, and hard work, we end the season simply thankful that we were able to give something at all.

There Are Seasons to Give and Seasons to Receive

Giving is meant to be done with love. More than our effort, God desires our hearts. No matter how small or simple our gift is, what God looks at is the heart that gives it.

There are seasons when we are called to give, and there are seasons when we are called to receive. Not having something to give does not mean failure. Sometimes, receiving is exactly what we need to do.

When it becomes your season to give again, pray not that something be returned to you, but that your gift be received wholeheartedly. Because more than the size of the gift, it is the heart behind it.

The Greatest Gift Given Out of Love

As we give and receive gifts, let us remember that there is a God behind the greatest gift. Jesus was sent by the Father and He humbly obeyed His will. This was not done out of pressure, but out of love.

God wrapped His Son not in colorful paper, but in sacrifice. Through His wounds and suffering, salvation was offered to us.

We can never give God something greater than what He has already given. Jesus is the greatest gift. What we can offer in return is our life, surrendered back to Him.

A Gift Given With the Heart

Yes, the gift matters.
But even more, the heart behind it matters.

May we always remember the love of God, shown through Jesus Christ. May we receive Him as the free gift from heaven, given out of love, not compulsion.

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Romans 10:9
