The Secret Place: Not Just Somewhere You Go, But Somewhere You Live
There’s a place where peace speaks louder than noise…
A place where the pressure fades, the striving stops, and your soul finally breathes.
For a long time, I thought that place was something I had to “get back to” when life slowed down… when I had more time… when I felt more spiritual.
But if I’m being honest—
I’m 28, I have a wife and a son, life is full, and sometimes it’s just noisy.
And even though I know how to pray…
even though I’ve experienced God before…
There are seasons where I realize—I haven’t really been in that secret place.
Not deeply.
I know I can go deeper… but somehow, I don’t.
And I think a lot of us live there.
Knowing… but not fully entering.
What Is the “Secret Place”?
When Jesus said in Matthew 6:6,
“Go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen…”
I used to think it was just about finding a quiet space.
And yes, it matters.
But now I’m starting to see—it’s more than that.
The secret place isn’t just a physical place.
It’s a place of honesty.
A place where I’m not trying to sound right.
A place where I stop performing—even in prayer.
It’s where I come as I am… not as I think I should be.
Because the truth is, God already sees everything anyway.
Jesus Didn’t Just Visit That Place—He Lived There
When I look at Jesus, I notice something.
He would withdraw and pray, yes.
But it wasn’t just a routine.
It was relationship.
His life had this constant connection to the Father.
And that’s where I feel the gap in my own life sometimes.
Because I can pray…
I can read…
I can even grow in knowledge…
But knowledge doesn’t automatically bring me closer.
I’ve been learning that the hard way.
It’s not what I know.
It’s Who I’m connected to.
And Jesus didn’t just invite us to visit that place sometimes.
He said, “Abide in Me.”
Not visit.
Not check in.
Abide.
What Does It Mean to Abide?
To abide means to stay.
To remain.
To keep coming back, even when you feel far.
If I’m honest, I don’t always feel “close” to God.
There are days I feel distracted.
Days I feel dry.
Days I don’t even know what to say.
Sometimes… I feel like I can’t even pray the way I want to.
But I’m learning this:
Even when I don’t have the right words…
the Holy Spirit within me does.
Even when my prayer feels weak…
it still reaches the Father.
Not because of me—
But because of Him.
And that humbles me.
Because at the end of the day…
I am nothing without Him.
How Do You Enter—and Stay?
I won’t pretend I’ve mastered this.
I’m still learning. Still coming back.
But here’s what I’m holding onto:
The secret place doesn’t start with perfection.
It starts with turning your heart toward God again.
Even if it’s simple.
Even if it’s messy.
Even if it’s just:
“Lord… I’m here.”
Some days it’s 5 minutes.
Some days it’s quiet.
Some days it’s just sitting there, knowing He sees me.
And slowly, I’m realizing—
Prayer doesn’t make me impressive.
It humbles me.
The Word strengthens me…
but prayer reminds me I need Him.
Not just once.
Every day.
Final Encouragement
If you’re like me…
You know there’s more.
You’ve tasted it before.
But maybe lately, you’ve been distant… distracted… or just tired.
This isn’t about guilt.
This is an invitation.
Come back.
Not when everything is perfect.
Not when you feel “ready.”
Just come as you are.
Because the secret place isn’t far from you.
And Jesus didn’t just make a way for you to visit it sometimes—
He made a way for you to live there.
If this spoke to you, take a few minutes today.
No pressure. No performance.
Just you and God.
Even if all you can say is, “I’m here.”
That’s enough to start.
