The Third Option the Bible Never Gave
There are topics many Christians avoid talking about openly, not because Scripture is unclear, but because the subject is uncomfortable. One of these is living as a couple without being married.
This is not written to single anyone out, nor to pretend that this struggle is rare. It is common, often quiet, and usually justified with good intentions. Yet the Word of God speaks clearly, and clarity is an act of love.
This is not about perfection. It is about response.
God Is Clear About Sexual Immorality
The Bible does not speak lightly about sexual sin. It is not treated as a small failure or a private matter.
“Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.”
1 Corinthians 6:18
Notice the instruction. Scripture does not say resist. It does not say manage. It does not say delay. It says flee.
This tells us something important. Some battles are not meant to be negotiated. They are meant to be escaped.
God Also Provides a Holy Path
God does not only warn, He also provides a way.
“But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.”
1 Corinthians 7:9
Marriage is not a concession to weakness. It is a God-ordained covenant. It is not merely a social arrangement, but a spiritual act that honors God’s design.
Marriage is not about being fully ready in comfort, finances, or perfection. It is about alignment with God’s order.
The Third Option the Bible Never Gave
Scripture is clear. When it comes to sexual immorality, God presents two responses.
First, flee sexual immorality.
Second, enter marriage and remain faithful.
Yet many create a third option that the Bible never teaches: delay.
Delay is often framed as wisdom. Waiting is called discernment. Indecision is excused as prayer. But Scripture never affirms prolonged disobedience.
“How long will you go limping between two opinions?”
1 Kings 18:21
Indecision is not neutral. Temptation does not pause while people are deciding.
“Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”
Hebrews 3:15
God is patient, but His patience is meant to lead to repentance, not to justify delay.
“Do you presume on the riches of His kindness and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?”
Romans 2:4
Scripture never warns people for obeying too early. It warns them for waiting too long.
What Happens When People Cannot Decide
The Bible does not say hesitation automatically condemns a person. But it consistently warns that delay is dangerous.
“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
Matthew 26:41
“Seek the Lord while He may be found.”
Isaiah 55:6
“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.”
Proverbs 27:1
Grace is real. Mercy is available. But tomorrow is never promised.
Obedience Is the Point
The question is not whether marriage is difficult.
The question is not whether people feel ready.
The real question is whether God is honored.
Marriage is not only a covenant between two people. It is a covenant before God.
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification.”
1 Thessalonians 4:3
There is no perfect marriage because there are no perfect people. Obedience has never required perfection, only surrender.
Closing Prayer
Lord God,
You see hearts better than we see ourselves.
Give us humility where we have delayed, courage where we have feared, and obedience where You have already spoken.
Lead us away from sin, not into shame, but back to You.
Teach us to respond while it is still called today.
Amen.
