Testing the Spirit: Lessons from Prophets Then and Now
If you haven’t read the first part of this series, start here: Listening to God’s Word in a World of Many Voices
Introduction: Moving Beyond Obedience
In our first discussion, we explored the story of the man of God in 1 Kings 13, his mission, and the test from the older prophet. Today, we go deeper: looking at how God’s Word is fulfilled despite human failure, what that teaches us about discernment, and how it connects to the ultimate prophecy we are living in — the return of Jesus Christ.
Even when humans falter, God’s Word is unstoppable, and His promises remain true.
Partial Obedience vs. God’s Word
The man of God obeyed God’s command at first but later ate and drank at the older prophet’s invitation. Judgment followed (1 Kings 13:24-25 WEB). Yet, the prophecy he delivered was still fulfilled — a truth that spans time itself.
Consider the prophecy he declared:
“…a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name… and human bones shall be burned on you.”
— 1 Kings 13:2 WEB
At that moment, nothing physically happened. But years later, under King Josiah, God’s Word came to pass:
Josiah cleansed Judah, destroyed the high places, and human bones were burned on the altar, fulfilling the prophecy exactly (2 Kings 23:15-16 WEB).
Lesson: God’s Word is infallible. Human mistakes, partial obedience, or delayed fulfillment cannot stop His plans. Prophecy may unfold years or decades later, but it will happen.
The Older Prophet as a Model of Discernment
The older prophet in Bethel, knowing the man of God’s command, approached him with a new message (1 Kings 13:18 WEB). While it may appear deceptive, his actions also demonstrate the prophet’s role in testing and discerning the Spirit.
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”
— 1 John 4:1 WEB
Testing prophecy is not distrust — it is spiritual responsibility. Like the older prophet, modern believers must weigh prophetic words carefully, comparing them with Scripture and seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit.
Modern Prophets and Discernment
Prophecy continues today, but under grace through Jesus Christ:
Modern prophets are human vessels and may make mistakes.
Believers must ensure prophetic words align with Scripture and point to Christ.
Discernment practices include:
Comparing words to the Bible
Praying for confirmation from the Holy Spirit
Observing the fruit of the prophecy: does it encourage, guide, or align with God’s character?
“Let two or three prophets speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.”
— 1 Corinthians 14:29 WEB
Prophecy remains God-centered, not human-centered. Even partial obedience or misunderstanding does not prevent God’s Word from being fulfilled.
The Ultimate Prophecy Today: Christ’s Return
While Jesus Himself was the prophecy fulfilled in His first coming — born, crucified, resurrected — the prophecy we live in today is His promised return:
“This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you have seen him go into heaven.”
— Acts 1:11 WEB
“Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me, to repay everyone according to what he has done.”
— Revelation 22:12-13 WEB
We live in the tension of “already, not yet”: Christ has defeated sin and death, but His Kingdom will be fully realized upon His return. All modern prophecy, teaching, and spiritual guidance ultimately point us toward preparation for that day.
Conclusion: Lessons Across Time
From the story of the man of God and the older prophet, to modern prophecy, and the ultimate prophecy of Christ’s return, we see these key truths:
God’s Word is supreme. Prophecy belongs to God, not humans.
Discernment is essential. Testing, like the older prophet did, ensures alignment with God’s truth.
Partial obedience does not thwart God. The prophecy about Josiah and the altar proves that God’s Word will be fulfilled even if humans stumble.
The Second Coming is the living prophecy today. All prophetic words should guide us toward Christ and His Kingdom.
Reflection for Today: Live faithfully, discern carefully, obey sincerely, and anticipate the return of Jesus Christ. God’s Word will never fail, and His promises are sure — whether fulfillment takes days, years, or generations.
