Ready, Get Set, Go: Preparing Our Hearts for God’s Next Season
A reflection from Joshua 1:8–9
Every season with God begins with preparation.
From today’s Sunday service, one simple but powerful pattern stood out to me:
Ready – ready your heart
Get Set – align with God’s Word
Go – move forward with strength and courage, knowing the Lord our God is with you wherever you go
This pattern is beautifully reflected in Joshua 1:8–9, where Joshua stands at a turning point, not only in Israel’s history but also in his personal walk with God.
Three Truths Joshua Had to Face
In Joshua 1, Joshua was confronted with three unchanging truths:
Moses is dead
The leadership is now his
God’s promise remains unchanged
Each truth carried weight, responsibility, and deep emotion.
Moses Is Dead: Accepting Loss Without Losing Faith
Joshua was not just Moses’ successor. He was close to Moses from the very beginning.
He stayed near Moses when God spoke.
He remained in the tent when others had already left.
He fought battles while Moses prayed on the mountain with Aaron.
Joshua did not merely obey Moses. He knew the God of Moses.
So when the Lord said, “Moses my servant is dead,” it was not just a transition of leadership. It was a moment of grief. Joshua lost a mentor, a spiritual father, a trusted leader, and a friend.
Yet Joshua understood something vital.
Moses may have died, but God did not.
In our lives, new seasons often require accepting that something must end. Not always people, but sometimes emotions, unforgiveness, sinful habits, old identities, or former ways of thinking.
To move forward, we must allow some things to rest in the past.
The old has passed.
The new has come in Christ.
The Leadership Is Now His: Stepping Into Responsibility
Joshua’s leadership did not come suddenly. He had been prepared for years.
He witnessed Israel’s unbelief.
He saw Moses’ heartbreak.
He experienced the weight of leading difficult people.
Joshua knew how heavy this responsibility was, yet Scripture never records him questioning why it had to be him.
Perhaps he understood that faithfulness in small things prepares us for greater responsibility.
Joshua served quietly. He obeyed consistently. He trusted deeply.
Maybe that reflects many of us today.
Working faithfully behind the scenes.
Serving without recognition.
Trusting God even when no one notices.
God sees faithfulness.
And when the time comes, He entrusts responsibility to those who are ready to obey Him.
The Promise Remains Unchanged: Moving Closer Requires Courage
God’s promise to Israel did not change with Moses’ death.
What changed was how close they were to its fulfillment.
The wilderness years were over.
The murmuring generation had passed.
The next step required courage.
Joshua knew that stepping closer to the promise also meant stepping into battle, responsibility, and loss. The leaders who once stood beside him were gone.
Still, the promise stood firm.
This reminds us today that God’s promises do not change because of human failure or loss. God remains the same yesterday, today, and forever.
No matter what others lost through disobedience, God remains faithful to those who trust Him.
Ready: Preparing the Heart
Before action comes preparation.
God’s command to Joshua began with readiness, not movement.
More than physical strength, God wanted Joshua’s heart prepared.
Prayer prepares the heart.
Prayer realigns our desires.
Prayer opens us fully before God.
We cannot hide our hearts in prayer. God already knows them.
So let us ask God to renew us, cleanse us, and prepare us for what lies ahead.
Get Set: Aligning With God’s Word
Joshua was instructed to meditate on the Book of the Law day and night.
Alignment comes from God’s Word.
We cannot align our decisions with God’s will if we do not know His Word.
The Bible is not meant to confuse us, but to guide us.
When we read Scripture, we learn what is right and wrong, not by culture, but by God’s truth.
Read your Bible.
Meditate on it.
Live it.
And when you feel lost, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you. He is our greatest teacher.
Go: Moving Forward With Strength and Courage
God repeatedly told Joshua to be strong and courageous.
Why?
Because Joshua would face battles.
So will we.
But we do not go alone.
God goes with us.
His presence surrounds us.
His peace replaces fear.
As our hearts are prepared and His Word shapes us, we walk forward not in fear, but in confidence.
Final Reflection: Ready, Get Set, Go
God is calling us to prepare, align, and move.
Prepare your heart.
Align with His Word.
Move forward with courage.
Just as He was with Joshua, He is with us today.
So let us be ready.
Let us get set.
And let us go.
