Not the Death That Ends Life, but the Death That Gives It

There are moments when life feels too heavy to bear. Pain, loss, failure, or shame can push people to think that death is the only escape. But God does not call us to a death that ends life. He calls us to a death that gives life—a death to the old self so that a new life can begin.

This is not about ending your days in despair. It is about letting the old self die so Christ can live in you. It is a death that transforms, heals, and renews.

Dying With Christ Through the Cross

When we place our faith in Jesus, we are united with Him in His death. Paul explains:

“We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” (Romans 6:4)

Water baptism is a powerful symbol of this truth. Going under the water represents dying with Christ—burying the old life ruled by sin, fear, and hopelessness. It is an outward step of obedience that shows we are responding to God’s call.

But the story does not end in the water.

Rising to a New Life by the Spirit

Coming up from the water represents resurrection into a new life. Jesus said we must be “born of water and the Spirit” to enter the kingdom of God (John 3:5). Water shows surrender, but the Spirit gives real transformation.

The Holy Spirit does not come to decorate the old life. He comes to replace it.

“If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

This is the kind of death God wants: not one that ends in despair, but one that ends the power of the old self and brings new life.

Responding to God’s Call

Salvation begins with God—He chooses, He calls, and He gives new life through His Spirit. But His call requires a response.

  • Water baptism is our act of surrender, showing obedience to God’s initiation.

  • Spirit baptism is God’s inward work, giving us the life and strength to walk in the new way.

Our response does not create salvation. It is the willing answer to God’s call, the moment we say “Yes” to His work in our hearts.

Life Situations May Stay the Same, But We Change

Following Christ does not mean our problems disappear. Hardships, struggles, and challenges may continue. Some situations may never change.

But the change that matters most is internal. The old self dies, and a new life begins in the Spirit. Peace replaces fear, hope replaces despair, and strength replaces weakness. Even amid the storms, we can live differently because the Spirit dwells within.

A Call to Those Struggling

If you feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or hopeless, hear this: you do not need to end your life to find relief. You need to die to the old self that fear, pain, or sin has fed on.

Jesus offers a better way. A way where death is not the end but the doorway to life. A way where the past is buried, and the Spirit gives strength to live anew.

This is the death God calls you to: death that gives life.

  • Die with Christ through the cross—through water baptism.

  • Rise with Him to a new life—through the Spirit.

  • Live today as a new creation, strengthened and empowered by God.

Do not wait. Respond to His call. Let the old die so the new can live.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for calling us out of darkness and into Your light. Thank You for giving us a way to die to our old selves and rise to new life in Jesus Christ. Lord, we confess our need for You—our fears, our pain, our struggles, and our old ways.

We respond to Your call today. We surrender our lives to You, laying down the old self, and we ask for the work of Your Spirit to make us new. Fill us with Your peace, hope, and strength. Help us to live each day empowered by You, even in the midst of challenges, and to walk in the life You have given us.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
