Life Is Short, but God’s Plan Has Always Been Eternal

In the beginning, God allowed humanity to live long lives. In the early chapters of Genesis, people lived for hundreds of years. This was not accidental. It reflected God’s original design for life and His glory as the Creator.

However, there came a moment when God clearly set a boundary.

“Yahweh said, ‘My Spirit will not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; yet his days will be one hundred twenty years.’”
Genesis 6:3 (WEB)

This was not just a number. It was a reminder that human life on earth is limited, and that we were never meant to live forever in this fallen world.

Humanity Did Not Only Receive a Limit, We Shortened Life Further

Even the 120-year limit is rarely reached today. Scripture itself acknowledges this reality.

“The days of our years are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty years.”
Psalm 90:10 (WEB)

Why did life become even shorter?

Not because God failed, but because humanity chose a way of living that brings death.

1. Sin affects not only the soul, but the body

Sin carries consequences that touch every part of human life.

“For the wages of sin is death.”
Romans 6:23 (WEB)

Bitterness, pride, hatred, immorality, and lack of self-control do not remain spiritual issues alone. They slowly destroy the body and the mind.

2. Choices that damage the body God entrusted to us

The body is a gift, yet it is often abused.

Unhealthy habits.
Destructive addictions.
Lack of rest.
Repeated neglect of wisdom.

“Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God?”
1 Corinthians 6:19 (WEB)

Rarely does life end because of one bad decision. More often, it is shortened by daily choices made without regard for God.

A Hard Truth: Life Is Short, Yet God Is Often Not the Priority

This is the deeper tragedy.

Life is already short.
Time is already limited.
Yet many still place God last.

Comfort before obedience.
Success before faithfulness.
Personal plans before God’s will.

“For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world, and forfeit his life?”
Mark 8:36 (WEB)

We live as though time is unlimited.

“For you are a vapor that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.”
James 4:14 (WEB)

What Should We Do With the Life That Remains?

We cannot recover wasted years, but we are responsible for how we live now.

1. Live with the awareness that life is short

This is not meant to create fear, but wisdom.

“So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Psalm 90:12 (WEB)

2. Seek God’s pleasure above personal desire

Life does not stop when we follow God, but everything finds its proper place.

“But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness.”
Matthew 6:33 (WEB)

3. Care for the body as a steward, not an owner

Strength allows us to serve God and others more fully.

4. Live for eternity, not merely for the present world

This life is preparation, not the final destination.

“Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth.”
Colossians 3:2 (WEB)

Conclusion: Life Was Limited, but God’s Love Was Not

God limited human life long ago. Humanity then shortened it further through sin and destructive choices. Yet despite this, God never abandoned His original purpose.

His plan was never merely that we live longer, but that we become like Him and share in His life.

That is why God did not simply extend earthly life. Instead, He offered something greater.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
John 3:16 (WEB)

Eternal life is not found in the length of our years, but in Jesus Christ Himself, the Son of God who became man for our salvation.

This eternal life does not begin only after death. It begins now for those who receive Him, and it will be fully revealed when He returns. And Scripture tells us that His return is near.

While there is still breath in us, the question is not how long we live, but to whom our life belongs.

If you have not yet received the Lord Jesus Christ, now is the time. Not tomorrow. Not someday.

Because eternal life is not found in time, achievement, or longevity, but in Christ alone, who loves, saves, reigns, and is coming again.
