Discipleship: Where Real Growth Begins
Why is ministry difficult? Why is it hard to continue? Where does growth even begin? How do we break through seasons when we feel stuck?
When we look closely at these questions, the Lord keeps pointing us to something simple but powerful. Discipleship.
Many believers have heard the word “discipleship,” but not everyone understands what it really means. We see it in the life of Jesus and the twelve disciples. We see it in Paul and Timothy. There is always one who leads and one who listens. This is discipleship.
But in our world today, there are more people who want to speak than people who want to listen. Everyone wants to preach, teach, and share what is on their heart, but only a few are willing to sit down, listen, and let the Word correct and shape them.
My Own Journey of Learning and Listening
I grew up hearing the Word of God. I attended camps, fellowships, and Sunday services. I listened to countless sermons and teachings. I have read the Bible many times but have not fully finished it before. As I grew older, something in me wanted to release everything I learned. I wanted to share it. I wanted others to learn something from me if they were willing to listen.
But even with the desire to speak, I realized something important. I can only give what I have. I should not be full of my own thoughts without room for the wisdom that comes from God. That is why I choose to listen. That is why I allow myself to be taught.
Because discipleship is not just about teaching. It is also about being teachable.
Why People Need Discipleship Today
People today need instruction. They need guidance. They need someone who will walk with them and hold them accountable. This is not a call for everyone to become a leader. This is a call for everyone to become a disciple.
Jesus modeled this perfectly. He taught His disciples, walked with them, and served them. He even washed their feet and told them to do the same for one another.
John 13:14 to 15 reminds us of this: “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.”
Paul also carried this heart. He told Timothy to look for reliable people and teach them so they could teach others too.
2 Timothy 2:2 says, “Entrust the things you heard to reliable people who will be qualified to teach others.”
This is discipleship.
And what does this mean for us?
Discipleship is not about being always in front. It is not about doing the biggest things in the church. It is about letting the Word of God put our life back in order. It is about speaking the Word to one another and also listening to it with humility.
When we stop talking about God’s Word, when we stop encouraging one another, when we stop sharing what God has revealed, the discipleship process stops.
When to Listen and When to Speak
If there is someone willing to teach you the way of the Lord, listen.
If there are people who want to know the way of the Lord, speak.
There is a time for everything. Do not speak when you are supposed to listen, and do not stay silent when God is asking you to speak.
Your words matter. Someone out there is waiting for your testimony.
Be a Disciple and Make Disciples
Be a disciple today. Look for people who are ready to be discipled, or create opportunities for them to grow. And while you are discipling others, let someone also disciple you.
Because true discipleship is not about you. It is not about anyone else. It is about the Word of God working in our lives and putting things back in order.
Discipleship: Our Purpose and Direction
Discipleship gives us purpose and a reason to keep moving forward. We do not only look for people to disciple. We also look after our own spiritual walk. We need to be discipled continuously and we are called to disciple continuously. This is the Great Commission.
Jesus said in Matthew 28:19 to 20, “Go and make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
When we choose to be shaped by His Word and help others grow in it, we walk with purpose, direction, and obedience. Discipleship is not about us. It is about the transforming power of God’s Word working through us and in us.
All glory to God. In Jesus name, Amen.
