God’s Presence: From the Temple to the Heart

Understanding the Holy Spirit, Prayer, and Fellowship in the New Covenant

Introduction

In the Old Testament, God’s presence filled the temple with overwhelming glory. Priests could not stand to minister because the Lord’s presence filled the house.

In 2 Chronicles 5:13–14, the cloud of God’s glory descended, marking the temple as holy. It was a powerful reminder that God dwelt among His people.

Today, many Christians ask:

  • If God once filled a building, where does He dwell now?

  • If believers receive the Holy Spirit at salvation, why did the disciples wait in Acts?

  • Do we still “call God down” when we gather?

  • What should prayer and worship sound like in the New Covenant?

  • What do unbelievers truly need — spiritual experience or Christ Himself?

Understanding these questions helps us walk in truth and helps others see authentic faith.

God’s Presence in the Old Covenant

When the temple was dedicated under King Solomon, God’s glory filled it. The temple became the sacred meeting place between heaven and earth.

Under the Old Covenant:

  • God’s presence was localized

  • priests mediated access

  • worship centered on a physical sanctuary

God dwelt among His people.

The New Covenant Shift: God Dwells Within His People

Through Jesus Christ, everything changed.

Believers are now called:

  • God’s temple

  • dwelling places of the Spirit

  • members of Christ’s body

God no longer lives in buildings made by human hands. He lives within His people.

This is not symbolic. It is spiritual reality.

Why the Disciples Waited in Acts

If believers receive the Spirit, why were the disciples told to wait?

The event in Acts of the Apostles 2 was not merely personal salvation.

Pentecost marked:

✔ the birth of the Church
✔ fulfillment of prophecy
✔ the Spirit poured out on all believers
✔ the inauguration of the New Covenant age

Before Pentecost, the Spirit worked selectively. After Pentecost, the Spirit indwells all who belong to Christ.

Pentecost happened once.
But fillings and empowerment continue.

The Spirit Works Before Salvation — But Indwells After

The Holy Spirit is active in the world today.

He convicts hearts, reveals truth, and draws people toward God.

Yet Scripture distinguishes between:

The Spirit working on someone
and
The Spirit dwelling within someone

Saving communion with God comes through faith in Jesus Christ. When a person believes, they are reconciled to God and receive the indwelling Spirit.

Unbelievers are not saved by spiritual awareness.
They are saved by union with Christ.

Do We Still “Call on God” If He Is Already Present?

This is an important distinction.

Believers do not call God as if He were distant.
We commune with Him because He is near.

Prayer is not summoning an absent deity.
Prayer is relational dependence.

We pray to:

  • align with His will

  • surrender our hearts

  • seek His guidance

  • grow in communion

Even Jesus prayed continually.

Personal Communion vs Corporate Fellowship

Being alone with God and gathering with believers are both essential.

Personal communion builds intimacy

When alone with God:

  • conviction deepens

  • guidance becomes clear

  • transformation happens

Corporate fellowship strengthens faith

When believers gather:

  • unity magnifies worship

  • encouragement multiplies

  • spiritual gifts operate

  • boldness increases

In Acts of the Apostles 4:31, believers prayed together and were filled with boldness.

God did not become more present.
They became more aware and responsive.

Is There a “Second Pentecost”?

Pentecost was unique and unrepeatable.

However:

✔ believers can be filled repeatedly
✔ revival and spiritual awakening occur
✔ God moves powerfully in united prayer

History records powerful revivals, but these are renewals, not new Pentecosts.

The Spirit continues to work wherever hearts are surrendered.

What Unbelievers Should See in Christians

Unbelievers should not see:

  • ritual religion

  • performance spirituality

  • distance from God

They should see:

✔ living relationship with God
✔ peace rooted in His presence
✔ transformed lives
✔ genuine love
✔ hope anchored in Christ

Our witness is not how loudly we pray, but how clearly Christ lives through us.

How Believers Should Pray in Fellowship

Because God is near, prayer language reflects communion rather than distance.

Instead of:

“Lord, please come down and be with us.”

We can pray:

“Father, thank You that You are with us. Help us become aware of Your presence.”

Example of a simple group prayer:

Father, thank You for bringing us together.
Thank You for Your presence through Jesus.
Holy Spirit, guide our hearts and teach us Your truth.
Shape us to love one another and walk in obedience.
We surrender this time to You. Amen.

Simple. Sincere. Relational.

What Happens When Believers Gather in Unity

When believers gather in humility and faith:

  • hearts are softened

  • truth is strengthened

  • love deepens

  • boldness grows

  • Christ is revealed through His people

God’s presence is not manufactured.
It is welcomed through surrendered hearts.

The Order of Salvation and Spiritual Life

  1. The Spirit convicts and draws

  2. The gospel is heard

  3. Faith in Christ is received

  4. The believer is reconciled to God

  5. The Spirit indwells permanently

  6. The believer grows in communion and obedience

The Beauty of the New Covenant

In the Old Covenant, God’s glory filled a building.

Today, His Spirit fills His people.

We do not strive to bring Him near.
We live in the reality that He already is.

We do not perform religion.
We walk in relationship.

We do not wait for His presence.
We yield to it.

Final Encouragement

Whether you are a believer growing in faith or someone seeking truth, this is the invitation:

God is not far away.
Through Jesus Christ, reconciliation is offered.
Through the Holy Spirit, new life is given.
Through fellowship, faith is strengthened.
Through communion, hearts are transformed.

Draw near to Him, and you will discover He has already drawn near to you.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
thank You for drawing us near through Jesus Christ.
Thank You for Your Spirit who gives us life, guides our hearts, and teaches us truth.

Help us walk daily in awareness of Your presence.
Shape us to love one another, live in humility, and reflect Christ to the world.

For those still seeking You, open their hearts to the grace found in Jesus.
Lead us all into deeper communion with You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
